Canon EOS M5 in the Test

Canon EOS M5 – so is Canon’s fourth attempt in the exciting market of mirror less system cameras. And in contrast to the precursors can be accessed almost without hesitation with this model.

Canon EOS M5 in the Test
Really convince the mirror less system cameras by Canon couldn’t so far. In the color photo leader board for APS-C cameras, the EOS is M10 currently the “Red Lantern” of the stalemate; and the M3 is to stay in the language of sports, just on a relegation place. Now, Canon is a new start and will take the M5 to M10, M, M3. It combines a 24-Megapixel sensor in the APS-C format and dual pixel technology such as in the EOS 80 d7-processor DIGIC. Price: 1150 euro.

Housing and Facilities

The Canon EOS M5 looks like a washed too hot SLR. But a full system camera is the 116 x 90 x 61 mm wide and approximately 430 g heavy model already at the first glance. The housing is covered except at top and bottom with a rubber-like plastic. This plastic is provided with a structure and feels very non-slip. The shape of the handle and the selected material provide first-class support – it seems like “Stick the camera in your hand”.
An advantage that is not to be underestimated especially in heavier lenses. A total of four dials are attached to the top of the camera: the mode dial with 12 positions is secured against twisting using a spring-loaded pin that right positioned dial for exposure compensation, so in the thumb area. The third adjustment wheel is located just next to the trigger, is outside knurled and has a button in the middle. The trigger has a ring which is also use to set the different functions, and on the back of the camera a four-way switch and six other buttons are positioned.
The many mechanical operating element of the Canon EOS M5 are confusing just at first glance, because it is quickly apparent that many functions with different controls can be invoked and adjusted according to the individual preferences of the user.
The Canon EOS M5 is excellent and solidly built. You seems robust, although the covers for the various connectors are not worthy of her. In common use, this rubber flaps in practice cancel simply. The equipment includes a built-in Flash with a guide number 5 at ISO 100 car are possible (E-mail TTLII), manual Flash and three settings for the Flash strength. An accessory shoe provides for connection to high quality Flash systems.
Besides WiFi and NFC, the Canon EOS comes with M5 also Bluetooth. Furthermore, the camera low power consumption can a permanent connection to check droid – and build iOS devices. On / switching off and trigger are possible, for other settings, such as remote control with live view on the Smart phone you switches (power fressenderes) Wi-Fi.

Lenses

Canon zooms currently only five and two fixed focal lengths offered for the EOS-M-mount, including a macro. Moreover, none of the lenses as light giant shows. This EF-EOS adapter moves the mount M in the focus of M5 prospective buyers. EF and EF-S lenses can be connected via mount adapter. We have measured their AF times for two combinations. The M lens offer, Canon has still need to catch up.

Sensor and Auto-Focus

As sensor brings the M5 from the EOS M3with known 24.2 MP resolution, however, the sensor is not the same. Also, the DIGIC-6 image processor was replaced by the current DIGIC-7 Variant. The new sensor is a dual-pixel CMOS type pixel from two photo diodes which can be separately read the focus by light (as with the 80 d). Thus the camera not only with EFM provides lenses, but also with EF / EF-S lenses quickly sharp, which are connected via adapter. The speed advantage is immediately noticeable, and confirm the laboratory values: where the M3 with 0.38/0.81 s (300/30 Lux) rather presented itself as a lame duck, the M5 with contemporary 0.26/0.28 scores s. Only the switch-on delay is somewhat leisurely with 1.7 s.
Test lens was a Canon EF-M 3,5-5,6/18-55, so a M lens. For comparison we also measured the AF speed of classic USM lens. The AF is not optimized in the measurement of a mirror less camera, but the result fits: the Canon EF 2.8/24-70 L USM comes with the mount adapter on 0.29/0.37 s at (300/30 Lux). In the third test candidates Canon EF-S 3,5-5,6/18-135 IS USM have we also decent values measured: 0.27/0.29 seconds at (300/30 Lux).

Screen and Viewfinder

The touch LCD occupies a large part of the back. With 3.2 inches on the diagonal, it is larger than at comparable cameras only to 0.2 inch (5.1 mm), which is enough however, bigger and thus more clearly to represent fonts and symbols something. Which in turn is very touch functionality of the display. We must target not laboriously tiny icons, but it works so, as you would expect from a good touchscreen: reliable and secure. The display has a resolution of 540 000 RGB pixels and can be upwards to 85° and down to 180 ° are folded. That makes difficult the tripod Selfies, because the tripod head to conceal the direct view to the monitor.
The 0.39 inch small OLED viewfinder has a resolution of 786 667 pixels and is in contrast to the M3 – built-in – slightly above the lens. The OLED technology with up to 120 B / s ensures a very fluid representation, the diopter adjustment alone is a bad joke, because the small slide requires several attempts until it fits.

Operation

Canon has revised the operating concept for the M5, it resembles the now more the DSLRs. where it makes sense, you can offload functions on mechanical controls – in conjunction with the reliable touch screen that is really intuitive. Common presetting data can be accessed with a touch of a button or rotary. The mode dial provides two customer positions C1 and C2. The user can here save setting data in the block and again call depending on the situation in the block.
The M5 in full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels, maximum 60 B / s, movies in 4 K you must forgo videos unfortunately. There is an internal image stabilization of an acceleration sensor measures the movements of the camera and the image processor that ent speaking charged. The M5 has a built-in stereo microphone for sound recordings, there’s a jack connector (3.5 mm) for an external microphone.

Image Quality

Canon supplies with more than 1800 a solid resolution, which remains up to ISO 1600 above the 1700s mark LP/bra at ISO 100. The DL values fall at least until ISO 800 in both high and low contrast areas neatly out. And one has significantly reduced the exaggerated edge enhancement – criticism of the M3. Our measurement is based on the picture style in fine detail. Overall, Canon has well the vote at low ISO levels under control. From ISO 800, the fine detail fades, and you should avoid sensitivities over ISO 1600.

Conclusion

The Canon EOS M5 offers finally what have wanted ambitious users have always been from a mirror less Canon – about a built-in viewfinder and a contemporary snappy autofocus. To this end, the M5 has the advantages that could throw even the M3 already in the balance like good image quality up to ISO 1600 and an adequate equipment. No question: The EOS M5 Canon finally in the mirror less market segment has arrived. 1150 euro also are ok for the convincing performance, but the thin lens program is inappropriate.

Comment of the Test Authors

Called EIA is located well above the 1,000 euro mark. That is for the housing per se OK, not too thin range of EF-M lenses would be there.Apart from a 22-millimeter fixed lens is not a lens, has to offer the an aperture of 2.8 or better, and that is a substantial mortgage for the EOS M5.
Although the EF and EF-S lenses without loss of function can be used – our AF measurement canons has confirmed this statement. They are big and heavy and degrade the Marlborough M5 almost to the accessories.
At least three powerful zooms, and five to six corresponding focal lengths should come to 2017. Then, the long dead trendy Canon-M system can expect but still have a future. Since the camera is clearly positioned over the available M lens program, we give up a recommendation until the appropriate lenses come.
